advanced lighting
sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. that’s what i learned in an earlier post, when i said “and you can use this technique to bake lighting.” which isn’t as powerful a statement as the image above (difference of 991 words.)
so here we have a box. some might recognize it as almost a cornell box. a qornell box, if you will. it’s built with the standard second life tools, textures, colors.
and here’s another box. notice the gradation in brightness down the sides of the box. notice the soft shadow cast by the sphere. notice the darkening in the corners. and notice the slight color bleed from the walls onto the floor.
this box was lit within maya, and had its textures baked with mental ray (using area lights, photon maps, and final gathering.) the scene and textures were exported to second life just like this.
