jwz
i just had an upsetting exchange with jwz on his blog. he deleted it all, and i always hate that. i’m posting it here without comment.
jwz: Well, the “they” of which we speak — artificial general intelligences — are, and I cannot emphasize this enough, fiction, and very likely always will be, so arguing about whether they have more in common with a fish or the color blue is uh… not helpful.
qarl: do you disagree that intelligence is a mechanical/chemical process? i ask because you said “and very likely always will be”. surely if intelligence is mechanical, one day we’ll have the computational resources to implement it. so it seems that you believe that intelligence is beyond mechanics. which sorta gets into the territory of religion. no?
jwz: Stars are a mechanical process and I don’t think the Techbro-Industrial Complex is going to be manufacturing one of those from scratch any time soon either. You seem to keep wanting to put words into my mouth about the nature of consciousness and I really want you to knock that off. This post is about hype, not whatever Kurzweil Matrix fumes you’re huffing. Lemme know when that Dyson Sphere has series A funding.
qarl: why so angry? do you believe that the chemistry of human brain is beyond implementation by a computer EVER? that’s what you just said. just say “no” if you mean no.
jwz: I don’t know and neither do you, and most importantly who cares? Go sealion about whatever axe this is you have to grind somewhere else.
qarl: it’s directly relevant to the AI issues you’ve been discussing. and i’m pretty sure that most of the scientific community believes that the human brain is a perfectly normal physical process, and can be implemented like any other one.
jwz: Ok we’re done here.
